Being placed in Priority Group 1 means a veteran has been assigned the highest possible priority tier within the VA Health Care System and this status is reserved for veterans with a service-connected disability rating of 50% or higher guaranteeing the most comprehensive coverage and the lowest out-of-pocket costs available.

Veterans in Priority Group 1 do not pay copayments for inpatient care, outpatient care, testing, or outpatient medications. In brief, FULL VA health care at no cost, with no co-pays.

The disabled veteran homestead property tax relief exempts the first $45,000 of the assessed value of the primary residence of a qualifying veteran or surviving spouse. To qualify for the property tax relief, under North Carolina law, the property owner must meet the criteria on the website for eligibility.

If you’re the spouse, dependent, or survivor of a Veteran who meets certain service-connected disability requirements, you may qualify for healthcare benefits through the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA).

If you are totally and permanently disabled, you may qualify for the discharge of your federal student loans and/or Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant service obligation. Commonly known as "student loan forgiveness".

TPD Discharge Program application

More than 20,000 scholarships have been awarded to children of North Carolina veterans. The North Carolina Scholarship Program was created to show appreciation for the services and sacrifices of its war veterans. The scholarship program applies to North Carolina schools.

The scholarship provides eight academic semesters, which must be used within eight years. Eligibility is based on the definition of “child” in 37 U.S.C. § 401 and applies to certain categories of deceased, disabled, combat, or POW/MIA veterans.

N.C. Scholarship for Children of Wartime Veterans

Space-available passenger transportation (Space "A" travel) is utilizing surplus aircraft seats and making them available to eligible passengers provided all space-required passengers and cargo have been accommodated.

Active duty service members, Guard/Reserve members, retirees, and 100% P&T disabled veterans (with a blue DD Form 2 ID), accompanied by their dependents, may fly Space-A.
