Choosing a decision review option

If you disagree with a VA decision on your claim, you can file a Supplemental Claim to add new evidence that’s relevant to your case or identify new evidence for review.

You can also ask the VA to review your claim for a newly presumptive condition through PACT ACT criteria.

If you disagree with a VA decision, you or your accredited representative can request a new review of your case by a higher-level reviewer.

The reviewer will determine whether an error or a difference of opinion changes the decision. You cannot submit new evidence with a Higher-Level Review.

Higher-Level Review

When you choose this option, you’re appealing to a Veterans Law Judge at the Board of Veterans’ Appeals (also called the Board) in Washington, D.C.

A judge who’s an expert in Veterans law will review your case.

Board of Appeals

If you disagree with a decision that your VA health care team makes about your treatment or care, you can request to have other medical professionals review that decision.

This type of decision review follows our Clinical Appeals process.

If you disagree with our decision on your Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) application, you have options to appeal or request a review of the decision.

Your options depend on the date we issued your PCAFC decision.

A contested claim is when you and someone else are claiming a benefit that only one person can claim.

You have 60 days to appeal to a Veterans Law Judge at the Board of Veterans’ Appeals in Washington, D.C. and a judge who’s an expert in Veterans law will review your case.
